Zigbee 3.0 replaces the default "join-on-power-up" behavior with
on-demand network formation. Devices remain unconnected by default after
factory reset. A coordinator must first execute "formation" to create a network and then run "Steering" to open the network (default duration: 180 seconds). The network can be closed early via the ZDP_MgmtPermitJoinReq broadcast command.
Secure Key Updates: If the coordinator’s NWK Key is compromised, it can be replaced. The new key is encrypted using the APS Key (instead of the default "ZigBeeAlliance09" encryption) and individually distributed to each device.
OTA Upgrade Protection: The APS Key encrypts firmware updates to prevent tampering during over-the-air (OTA) upgrades.
After a device joins the coordinator, the coordinator records the device’s MAC address and assigns a unique APS Key. This key serves two critical purposes:
Centralized Network Management
Zigbee 3.0 introduces a robust device management framework. The coordinator tracks all device join/leave events, enabling centralized control and management of the entire network from the coordinator.
Zigbee 3.0 refines the Zigbee Cluster Library (ZCL) protocol to enhance modularity. Device functionalities are formatted under ZCL specifications, allowing even custom features to transmit within standardized ZCL data structures. This ensures backward compatibility and flexibility: hardware updates or feature modifications no longer require extensive data format overhauls.
EBYTE stands out with its TI CC2530/CC2630-based Zigbee modules, offering auto-networking, self-healing, and ultra-low power consumption. These modules excel in smart homes, industrial sensors, and healthcare applications, making EBYTE a preferred choice for high-performance, reliable IoT solutions.
